Kandi Barbour, born Kandie Lou Dotson (February 15, 1959 – January 18, 2012), was an American adult model, pornographic actress, and exotic dancer. She was very popular with audiences in the 1970s and 1980s, and retired from the film industry in 1987. In 2009, she was inducted into the Pioneers branch of the X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) Hall of Fame.

Biography Edit

Barbour was discovered by photographer Diana Hardy in the early 1970s, and was featured in "virtually every men's magazine" through 1975, as well as in ads for K-Tel Records. That year, she performed in her first pornographic film. In 1987, after appearing in dozens of films, Barbour retired from making films. Several companies have released compilations of her earlier loop films, indicating ongoing interest in her work, over 30 years since her departure from the adult industry.

Barbour was the star of such notable films as Screwples, Sex Boat, The Budding of Brie, Bon Appetit, Young, Wild and Wonderful, and Sizzle. She was the cover girl for Cecil Howard's landmark film, Neon Nights, which was named one of the 100 greatest adult films of all time.

Kandi Barbour tried to cross over into mainstream acting, and even appeared on episodes of the hit Tom Selleck television show, Magnum, P.I., while she was living in Hawaii. But in the 1980s, having a porn past, especially one as public as Barbour's, was still considered scandalous and taboo, and it was a road block to mainstream acting roles for Kandi and many other porn stars of the time.

Modern Compilations Edit

Like many other Golden Age stars, DVD compilations from a variety of companies have been produced from her 8mm loop work as well as clips from movies not currently available in that format. One uses clips from Kate and the Indians and California Gigolo; another marketed by different company uses loops as the main content. Additionally, Blue Vanities has several of her loops on VHS tapes. As with many adult stars, there are unlicensed compilation DVD's available through various auctions sites as well.

Death Edit

A homeless woman was found dead on a street in San Francisco, California, on January 18, 2012. The body was later identified as Barbour. She was 52. She left behind a son, whom she had with pornographic actor and musician, Rick Marty. The cause of her death was not released to the public. Because next-of-kin could not be found in a timely fashion, her body was donated for medical science to a local university, then it was cremated. Her ashes were spread in the San Fransisco Bay.

Controversy Edit

Kandi Barbour was long believed to have been born Linda Jean Smith in either 1952 or 1956 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. After her death, trying to find next-of-kin, it was revealed that she was born Kandie Lou Dotson in Russellville, Alabama in 1959. This revelation brings into question the legality of her earlier works, as Barbour would have began doing porn at the age of 15 - after years of doing nude modeling. The adult industry, as a whole, is disputing the claim of her name and date of birth, and continues to sell her films and pictures. Some distributors have been selling titles stating that they were filmed after 1977, with some biography sites stating that she only became active after 1977 (when she would have turned 18), even though they still have her listed with the debunked date of birth.

As of January 1, 2017, there has been no official announcement that any of her work is now considered child pornography.
